The Mohawk Valley was traditionally Iroquois territory, during the French and Indian War (1754–1763) this region was the center of international struggles and of prime strategic importance. As the only natural east-west passage through the Appalachian Mountains in what is now Canajoharie, it provided a corridor to the Great Lakes for the British enabling them to threaten the French directly. Also providing the French with a corridor to the Hudson Valley and on to the heart of British North America. In addition, many settlements of the Mohawk, Britain's crucial Indian ally at the time of the war, were located in this area.
