Christmas tree ornaments began in the 1800’s in English households. At first they began as items easily found in nature, such as nuts, fruit or pine cones. Americans have strung popcorn and/or cranberries into strands to string around Christmas trees for hundreds of years. We will study the history of holiday ornaments and make several historical and crafty ornaments to take home and hang on your family trees!

Wanda Burch, historian and writer, Glen, NY, and singer/songwriter John Kenosian, Clifton Park, will present Home Voices: Christmas in the American Civil War through Words and Music at The Century Club, Amsterdam NY, on December 16, 3:00 p.m. Joining Wanda and John will be guest soprano Gisella Montanez-Case.

Providing fresh perspective on the human side of the Civil War, this program explores the dreams and imaginings of those who fought the war as recorded in their letters, journals and memoirs during the Christmas season. The focus on dreams and the meaning of “home” to the soldier and his family, particularly during the Christmas season, were often some of the more poignant letters of longing for missed loved ones and traditions and gatherings with family and friends, many of whom would not be returning home. Accompanying readings from correspondence and journal entries will be original songs, written and composed by singer/songwriter John Kenosian, based on the stories of the soldiers and their loved ones in Wanda Burch’s The Home Voices Speak Louder than the Drums: Dreams and the Imagination in Civil War Letters and Memoirs, (McFarland Publishers, summer, 2017). Books will be available.

Audience participation will be welcomed on some of the more familiar traditional Christmas songs written in the Civil War period, including a few more modern favorites.

Burch and Kenosian received an artist performance grant from Saratoga Arts for the presentation of performances in Montgomery County in 2017. Home Voices: the American Civil War Experience through Words and Music is scheduled for six venues in Montgomery County.
