Performing in “Home Voices: The American Civil War Experience through Words and Music” are John Kenosian, singer/songwriter, Wanda Burch, historian and writer; and Gisella Montanez-Case, soprano. Readings from Civil War letters will be from The Home Voices Speak Louder than the Drums [Wanda Burch]. Accompanied by original words and music by John Kenosian, based on the letters from soldiers and their families written in the American Civil War, this performance captures the human side of the Civil War, through the dreams and imaginings of those who fought it, as recorded in their letters, journals and memoirs. The words – and music – reflect the personalities and experiences of their authors, ranging from fear, pain, loss, homesickness and disappointment, some with glimpses of humor.

Audience participation is encouraged on additional traditional songs from the period. Copies of the book will be available after the performance.

Saratoga Arts made this program possible with an Individual Artist Grant – Community Arts Grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislators
