In an area of 409 square miles, the county has ten villages, one city (Amsterdam), and 10 towns, with a total US Census 2000 population of 49,708. Our county boasts six libraries and the Montgomery County Department of History and Archives, all of which are rich resources for local history and genealogical research. Nearly 90 churches, synagogues, and places of worship are available for the spiritual needs of the community.
Montgomery County is ideally located to service all major eastern US and Canadian markets. Located just 27 miles west of Albany in the Mohawk Valley we are within 750 miles of over half of the population of the US and Canada.
Montgomery County is accessible by Route 5 and 5S and by the NYS Thruway from exits 27 (Amsterdam), 28 (Fonda-Fultonville), and 29 (Canajoharie/Palatine Bridge), as well as by scenic Routes 10, 30 and 30A, heading south from the Adirondack State park, and 67 from Saratoga.
